Start of New Entertainment Center Project

We were recently commissioned to build a white oak cabinet to house the TV and audio equipment of a couple living in one of the high-rise condos downtown.  We are working with Jay Jeffers, an acclaimed designer in the San Francisco area, to collaborate on the design of this cabinet that will be the focal point of the room.  The design is loosely based on a cabinet that the couple had seen and liked when they were in Bay area.  Major modifications were made in the design to accommodate the functions required by the electronic equipment as well as the structural modifications Mark required in order to assure that the panels could move with the temperature and humidity changes.

To start the process, Mark chose clear rift-sawn oak.  The designer wanted to see a sample of the finished paneled door before Mark could start production on the entire cabinet in order to confirm panel design and the complicated finish techniques of this wire-brushed and white glazed finish.  Both Mark and the clients wanted a subtle suggestion of the white glaze in the grain, but wanted the natural oak wood color to show through.

Once the sample panel was approved, Mark began all the milling of the rough oak.  This cabinet with all of its paneled doors required many hours of mortising and tenoning.  At last, the less complicated paneled frame for the back of the cabinet was glued together and sanded.  Mark then worked on the interlocking front panel pieces.  Each piece has to be wire brushed before assembly into the final paneled doors.
