Texas Furniture Exhibit

Mark was recently asked to consult on the new exhibit opening in the Bullock Museum.  Texas Furniture from the Ima Hogg Winedale Collection will open July 13 in the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Hall of Special Exhibitions in the Bullock Museum at 1800 N. Congress Avenue in Austin, TX.  The exhibit is guest-curated by Mr. Lonn Taylor.  Mr. Taylor and David B. Warren co-authored Texas Furniture, The Cabinetmakers and Their Work, 1840-1880.  This book has recently been revised and republished with added photos and text in a two volume edition.   Mark’s original version of this book is well-worn and dog-eared from many years of reference and study.

Mark will be one of three Texas craftsmen featured at the invitation-only opening reception.  Mark will also be giving a presentation at the museum on Sunday, September 22, 2013, to give insight into the work of a modern day Texas furniture craftsman.   This presentation will be open to the public and admission to the museum will be free that day.

This Winedale Collection is part of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, at the University of Texas at Austin. The exhibition will run July to October 6,201.  The Briscoe Center's Winedale Collection owes its name to Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg (1882-1975), who bought and restored the 19th century farmstead at Winedale, near Round Top, Texas, to house her vast collections. The only daughter of Texas governor James Stephen Hogg, she was a pioneer collector of American furniture and a long-time supporter of historic preservation. The Winedale Collection is recognized as the most significant collection of Texas furniture in the United States.
